ÇUKURCUMA HAMAMI

About Us

Çukurcuma Hamamı was built in the 1830s when the wife of Abdulhamid I and the spiritual mother of Mahmud II, French-born Naqshidil Valide Sultan, brought water installations to the Çukurcuma area. The hammam was also known as Sürahi Hamamı and later called Süreyya Hamamı by locals. The Kubbe covering the warmness, Göbektaşı, and Halvet are bright and spacious, still reflecting the magnificence of their era.

It is also known that the great poet Constantinos Kavafis of Alexandria, who lived in Istanbul between 1880 and 1885, was one of the famous and important regents of the hammam.

In 1997, the Turkish/Italian director Ferzan Özpetek used Çukurcuma Hamamı for his first feature film *Hamam*, shooting scenes at the Göbektaşı and Camekanlık.

Çukurcuma Hamamı, which was closed in 2007, began accepting guests as a boutique Turkish hammam in September 2018 after a long renovation period.
